Episode 51: Torrent
I figured since it’s the new season and we’re being late I should at least say something. We’ll get it out soon, so just hang in there. No need to respond, I’ll delete this post when we release.
Holy shit that ending
Woohoo, new KyoAni anime!
And thus starts the autumn 2013 season of anime. It took us about 12 straight hours of work to get this out to you, but I’m damn happy that we did it. To all the new visitors: welcome, and thank you for checking us out. For those of you who haven’t even heard of us before—why aren’t you watching Aikatsu? And finally, thank you to everyone who has come back once again for another season of anime. As this is a supernatural show we had to make some choices with the terminology, and though I have yet to compare to other groups I will explain our reasoning after the break. In any case, if you somehow got here before seeing us on Nyaa or something here’s the link (which we should really get to updating soon).
Episode 01: Torrent
Those irreplaceable memories and uneventful days…
So here we are at the last episode of the season. Let me tell you (because I typed up the bottom part first and forgot to put this in), I was not expecting Aikatsu to be 50 goddamn episodes. We learned this I think 7 episodes in, and resolved to finish it no matter what. Well, here we are, staring at the face of another 50 long episodes. Let’s see if our resolve doesn’t waver as time goes on.
Akatsukin (TL, timer, QC, TS, kfx (some), song TL (some)):
One year ago, I was inspired to start a fansubbing group. Etoce and I had played with the idea earlier, but neither of us had taken initiative until that time. I regularly checked fansubdb, looking to see if there were any show that was interesting, not too difficult, and not taken by another group. The first week of the 2012 Fall season came around, and I started downloading several raws for the first time. That’s when I stumbled upon a new idol show called Aikatsu! Nobody else was doing it, I knew I liked idols from AKB0048 and idolm@ster, and because it was a children’s show I knew it wouldn’t be too hard for our first subbing enterprise. Most importantly, I fell in love with Ichigo almost immediately.
I still remember that first week, desperately figuring out how to use aegisub, scrambling to make a website that looked good, and most importantly, coming up with a name for our group. If I remember correctly, it must’ve taken at least two full days of thinking (while all the while worried my efforts would go to waste) before I was inspired. I thought long and hard about what we could be called that also related to idols—and then it hit me. We would be “Mezashite!”, in honor of the girls who were ever aiming to become the top idol. I ran it by Eto (who rejected my alternative “Mezase!”), and our group was born. Yuyu joined us after the second episode, appalled that we didn’t have a proper encoder.
It hasn’t quite been a full year yet, but a lot has happened, and I’m glad we’re here today. We may still have a long way to the top, but we’ll keep on Aikatsu-ing all the way.
Etoce (Editing, TS, kfx, song TL (most))
Everything I can say about that first week is pretty much the same as what Akatsukin said, except that I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the name “Mezashite!”. I suppose one grows to like one’s name, though. I did, at least. My leading alternative was “Orbit”, which was an astrological term, a brand of chewing gum, and a vowel-starting-with word. The best fansub group ever had a name with those qualities, so I thought that taking that name would make us awesome for sure. (The main downside with “Orbit” being that it sounded pretty bad.)
As for Aikatsu, I liked it.

Episode 50 (END): Torrent
I have no idea when this started, but it’s gotten way out of hand.
The long sailing that bound us together is over.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode follow this pattern, but I guess if you’re going to do it, you might as well make it the last episode. Also, have some comments:
Etoce (Translation, Timing, QC)
First off, let me apologize for being American. I tried to keep spellings (like “traveller” and “favourite”) and words in the British style during the English lines, but I messed up quite a few times (like with “Mom”).
Anyway, I wanted to try translating one of this kind of show, so I did. It turns out that it gets repetitive if you’re watching each episode at least four times (once to watch it, once to time it, once to translate it, and once at the end to make sure it’s okay) and there’s no real development it wears on you. I really liked the show at the beginning and I enjoyed watching all the episodes when I saw them for the first time, but working on it kind of grinds the luster off it.
That resulted in some of the lines that were technically sort of right, but stuck out (like “I want a manly man who gives it to me straight”), which were the result of me not having enough love with which to word the line well.
Akatsukin (Editing, Typesetting, TLC)
And thus ends our third single-cour series. This had way more signs than I was used to, but in exchange I think I got a lot better at typesetting. Normally I love this kind of show, but being on the subbing side might’ve made me enjoy it less than I would have if I wasn’t putting all this effort in. I have to say though, that was probably one of the best final episodes this year.
Episode 12: Torrent
An angel has descended upon us
I don’t know how to feel about this second to last episode. I mean, I know how to feel about the episode (which, by the way, is euphoria), but not about how I’ve been doing this for the last 49 weeks. At least I know that Etoce wishes I knew how to actually formulate questions properly instead of sticking question marks onto sentences.

The decision has been made: Mezashite! will be subbing KyoAni’s new anime, Kyoukai no Kanata, next season. And this time, the chuunibyou delusions are real. Too bad they didn’t keep the concept art…
That’s all we’ve got for you right now. We don’t think this is going to change, but other anime may be picked up or dropped as we see fit. Maybe. Don’t ask.
